Has anyone used Cecil King? I am having our stoop stairs repaired. The last mason to have done them did a crap job and now large chunks of the concrete have broken away and several stairs are cracking. I want to make sure we get the right person to repair them this time.
I have tried calling metro several times but it seems they are too busy to return calls.
OK thanks… Hope it works out for you. Please keep me posted if you remember i would love to get a good rec.
I haven’t had the work done yet. I am waiting for an estimate from the more recent guy. I prefer not to tell you his name until I’ve seen the work completed (and I don’t know if I’ll get that far…I think he’ll want to re-do the entire stoop and I doubt I can afford that right now). But it is a name I’ve seen mentioned on these boards from time to time.
sorry i meant the poster who used Cecil and is unhappy with his work… I would like to know who you used and if you are happy with that job?
thanks,
d

Can you tell me who the well known firm was that fixed your steps? Obviously i would like to not pay twice as we already have. The first job was done less than 10 years ago and the steps are all cracking. That doesn’t seem right to me.
At the risk of repeating myself, I used Cecil King (who came recommended to me by Landmarks Preservation) for a full facade and stoop rehab about 10 years ago. 2 years ago a step on my stoop started to deteriorate, developing 6 inch wide shallow holes that looked like something was etching away at the brownstone. Another contractor (a well known brownstone repair firm) explained that the work was done very poorly. They needed to take a lot more stone away when they stripped the stoop in order to get down to solid stone which would bond with the concrete layer (which would then bond with the brownstone material). I could see that each layer was very very thin. Chemicals in the stone would have been blocked by the concrete, but are now seeping through and will eventually destroy the stoop. I can only hope that a better job was done on the facade. I tried to call Cecil King to take a look. He couldn’t be bothered to call back. Needless to say, I strongly suggest you avoid him unless you like paying twice for work.
Call Metro at his cell phone 917-731-4388. Should get a response promtly
good luck. he came to my house to look at a simple repointing job, never submitted a bid and never returned any subsequent calls.
We used Cecil King for some facade repairs. He did a nice job for us, though I can’t say anything about how long it will last as the work was done just last month.
