I’m wondering if anyone has experience with converting a single family into a legal 2 unit — or even making the second unit into a condo. Thanks.

Your question is not specific. In general conversions from one to two family homes are strait forward. You will need to get a new Certificate of Occupancy. You are permitted only two kitchens unless you are Jewish and keep to Kosher laws.

Cellars can’t be used as a unit but are permitted as part of one as long as it doesn’t have a habitable room such as a kitchen or bathroom.

If you are going to expand on this building other rules apply that I can’t address at this time.

You do have to provide a minimum of fire separation and how that is configured depends on your proposed layout.

I recommend you retain an architect early in your planning.

The best recourses to find one are the New York Society of Architects and the American Institute of Architects. Brooklyn has its own chapter.

    Good luck
