The sidewalk in front of our two family brownstone has gotten increasingly bad over the years due to a growing tree. It has completely buckled and cracked and we worry about people hurting themselves. I hear the city is supposed to repair it if its in front of a private home. If so, how long does it take to get the city to fix it?

  1. Actually there is a new city pilot program called Sidewalks….something. The city is now fixing sidewalks. Call 311. They will send an inspector and you will get a rating depending on how bad the sidewalk is. They are fixing the worst ones first.

  2. In theory the City is supposed to issue a violation and repair the sidewalk (at the owner’s expense) if he/she does not have it done on their own. Several years ago almost everyone on my block received a violation. It turned out to be less expensive to let the City have their contactor do the work than for individual homeowners to have it done plus the City didn’t bill homeowners for over a year. IIRC “my” 20′ sidewalk cost about $1,000. (I put “my” in quotes, because it’s City property and I think it sucks that homeowners in NYC must pay for sidewalk repairs, but that’s how it works.
