looking for any advice on this including chimney companies, alternatives…words of encouragement.
I just had a chimney company come to make an inspection of the flu for my furnace/hot water heater and they said tiles were falling and I’d need a liner. They said the flu was horrible. And they’re the second company that said so.
Surprising because I just bought the house and 6 mos ago the home inspector looked at the flu and gave it a clean bill of health. Both chimney contractors said the aweful condition was apparent to the naked eye and they were shocked a home inspector didn’t catch it.
I think I should have some recourse…anyone have thoughts?
I’ll second Mr. Chimney. We were very happy with the job they did for us (installed a boiler chimney liner); also, they guaranteed the work for life.
When I lived in a Fort Greene house (that had been vacant for over a year prior) the chimney had same problem. They shut down the gas (no heat or hot water)until the landlord put in metal lining in the chimney.
Mr. Chimney 212.230.1444. We had the same problem last winter 2005, had it repaired in may 2005 and had a fantastic winter 2006, no problems whatsoever. it wasn’t cheap but worth it, as we didn’t have to think about whether we were going to kill our children, tenant and dog.
Too narrow for what? We had a steel lining dropped down our chimney because 100 year old terra cotta was failing. They did question whether the lining would fit at first but if I remember correctly there were two options in sizes. I cost 3,000.00 2 1/2 years ago and the company’s name was Brookfield. They were prompt, clean, thorough in their inspection and pleasant. Good luck.
We actually relined a flue in a chimney this year for our new woodburning stoves, and BP chimney on long island did a great job for not a terrible shock of a sum. I would recommend calling them up and asking them. I’m sure they’ll come by for a free estimate.
