Hello, We have the opportunity to rent a beautiful bi-level apartment in the Parlor Level of a Brownstone. The only hesitation is the that there is a wrought iron spiral staircase that leads to the second floor. Is there any way that this can be baby proofed? Gates at the top and bottom are not accpetable. Our daughter is 2 and we have another one on the way. Thanks, Lisa
i am renting a house with spiral stairs and i have a 1 1/2 yr old. the only solution i can come up with is to put a round babygate at the bottom. i think they are called superyard xt or something like that. around $65 babiesrus, target
I have the same problem, and it isn’t that gates are unacceptable, it is that it is unacceptable as a TOTAL solution. No need to accuse the first poster of being nuts or “on drugs.” My sprial staircase has spindles that are 15″ apart, making it easy for a baby to enter (or fall off of) the stair case on the sides. I think more recent construction may require more spindles, but our stairs are old.
The post before mine gets to the heart of the matter. What do you do about the sides? It sounds like you can get some kind of plastic sheeting. I found this site looking for a source for some kind of material to close up the sides.
Our friends who have a spiral and a duplex babyproofed with a gate (I don’t see how you could get around that), plus that clear plastic sheeting that you can get to cover the space between rails/spindles. They are raising two kids with a spiral staircase, and it seems to be working out.
I am just curious if there is something specific to spiral stairs that makes them “an accident waiting to happen.” Aren’t all stairs a problem for babies, without supervision?
Gates are not acceptable? Are you on drugs?
Babies & spiral staircases are an accident waiting to happen. I wouldn’t feel comfortable.
What are you worried about specifically? Gates are not acceptable to you – because you don’t think it is enough – or to the owner? Is there no back to the riser? How many spindles are there per stair?
