Can anybody recommend a contractor who would be willing to work in Greenpoint to remove the vinyl siding, restore or replace the wood as necessary, and install new windows? Sadly, this probably isn’t a pure ‘preservation’ opportunity, since the former owner completely destroyed the original window apertures, among other things, and I don’t think it would be feasible for us to do a true restoration. But we would like to get some bids so that we can at least improve the facade with some measure of respect for the building’s history, and replace the cheap, leaking, crappy windows that we’ve currently got. Thanks!!

  1. Couple of suggestions:
    a) order a copy of the 1940’s tax photograph of your house to see what it looked like – the original facade might very well have been wooden shingles…
    b) Greenpoint has a number of original frame houses that still have the original wooden shingles on them. And then there are the pioneers who are having their frame houses re-shingled in the old way…beautiful. Why don’t you consider that??

To see some examples of new wooden shingles in the old style (diamond and scallop shaped) go to:
*Noble Street between Manhattan and Franklin Aves…there are some houses that have done this located closer to Franklin.
*Calyer Street: start at the junction of Franklin Ave and you’ll see a house with pink wooden shingles on your left. A bit further (going toward the Greenpoint Savings bank) on the right side and on a corner is a bar that has redone the entire upper 2 floors in wooden shingle.

I’m a recent home owner in Greenpoint and we are planning on doing this too…just need to research who does these.

I say no more vinyl – go wood!!

  2. That was facade only, but Arthur indicated that it would be more cost-effective to do the entire building (i.e. not 25K for each surface).

  3. They did a bunch of houses on Windsor Place, some down on 15th street in the SSlope. For those who think those aluminum siding houses are hopeless wrecks check out what a little T and A can do.

  4. T&A Carpentry in Red Hook is great. They do all the framehouse renos in FG/CH. I had them come do an estimate for my 3-story, 20′ wide house. Arthur quoted me 25K w/o new windows possibly more depending on the trim. So they’re not cheap, but they do an amazing job. I think they have a website with a photo gallery, so you may want to google them.
