Insulation to replace asbestos on pipes
Hi, we’re planning on having asbestos removed on the pipes in our basement and are wondering what to do about re-inisulating. Pipe man said the insulation comes in varying widths, from an inch up. Does anyone know what makes the most sense, cost-efficiency wise?

The asbestos was already gone when I bought the house. So I only had to put on the insulation. That part is inexpensive. Asbestos removal is a big deal.
Was it easy to do yourself? The quote we got was for $2k to replace the insulation, which is more than we afford right now.
I went with Overkill. I have very thick insulation on my pipes. It really makes a difference. The basement is no longer the hottest place in the house. I wrapped every exposed pipe in the basement with 3 inch thick stuff I got online.
1/2″ fiberglass insulation on your steam piping should be fine. More insulation is better but only to a point. Anything thicker than 1″ is likely to be overkill.
