Can anyone recommend a good contractor and/or architect to work with in addressing mortar breakdown/deterioration in stone foundation walls of a brownstone? We have gaps in between stones in the foundation were the mortar has turned to dust and fallen away. An engineer told us we likely need to replace the foundation walls and that it will be a significant and involved project. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

  1. i’ve done this repair a ton of times to my own house and my brownstone. a good way to start is clean out all the gaps, wet them down with a spray bottle the fill them with mortar. you can mix the mortar and then put it in a pastry bag(the same you would use for baking) and squeeze it into the gaps. let it dry alittle and smooth it or brush it with a small wisk broom.

  2. I am looking for an engineer for a similar issue. Would you recommend your engineer? If so, I’d truly appreciate his name/contact information. Thanks.
