A/C : portables? central?
One of the selling points of our house when we bought it, is that it has forced air heat, and therefore (supposedly) easy to add-on A/C. Furnace guy came to fix furnace on day that it was 17 degrees, and he said, not the type of forced air we have. He said the A/c wouldnt…
One of the selling points of our house when we bought it, is that it has forced air heat, and therefore (supposedly) easy to add-on A/C. Furnace guy came to fix furnace on day that it was 17 degrees, and he said, not the type of forced air we have. He said the A/c wouldnt be effective in our system. Heat is fixed, but we are dissapointed, looking towards summer to say the least. NOT one more summer with those horrible monsters that blockout the windows….
Our parlor floor parlor room is probably only 25 ft across, or so, and is used as a bedroom. With the a/s unit in, it is dark and then there is no possibility to open a window when one wouldnt otherwise need the a/c. I am wondering if anyone can recommend one of theose window-less portable a/c units, like delonghi makes, from experience. Alos, any comments about any hope for central air, and who to go to would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
We’ve had the Mitsubishi MRSLIM for 3 years now and LOVE it!! Super quiet both inside and out. You don’t even know its on. Virtually maintenance free and most importantly, we can look out our windows! 24,000 btus’s should cool an entire parlor floor. We used Weston Bros. out of Queens and they were fantastic.
Info on the split Mitsubishi units are available at http://www.mrslim.com. There’s a number of other manufacturers, and I can’t recommend the Mitsubishi specifically (although it’s what our A/C contractor recommended and what we’re installing). It’s basically an external compressor, with a long narrow pipe that carries the refrigerant (that is, whatever they use instead of Freon these days) from the external compressor to the internal unit. All the internal unit has in it is a fan and a radiator: the coolant expands, coolin the radiator, and the fan runs the air past it. It’s called a “split unit” because it’s basically a regular air conditioner cut into two halves. They make compressors that can run up to 3 different internal fan units.
Call a few central A/C installers and get bids.. it might not be as bad as you think. Also, they have creative ways of hiding the ducts.
You see them in restaurants quite a bit. They consist of a small compressor outside and a slim wall mounted unit (about 12 tall and 36 wide and 8 deep).
What are the package Mitsubishi units?
I’ve used the windowless Delonghi unit before. It has to work pretty hard to really cool things down, and needs to be attended as it has a water holding tank that needs to be emptied periodically. It does a reasonable job of dehumidifying on those really miserable days, but is no substitute for the real deal. If you have exterior space for a compressor (roof, yard, etc…) you should be able to install the central air through your ex’g ducts or add those package Mitsubishi units to each room (or two).
