How do people go about doing th A/C in a larger brownstone with out destroying the look and feel? Has anyone put in central A/C or is this just a pipe dream? Should I just admit that the window unit is the way to go? I’d love some feedback or recommendations.

A/C

  1. In a 4 story house you can put a unit in the basement and one on the roof and do two and two. However the parlor floor cooling can be prohibitively expensive to run so many people just do the top two floors which are ususally bedrooms.

  2. Love my Mr Slim! going on our 4th year with it and its a gem. Even had a Con Ed guy come in to do some work and he commented on how great it was.\, and its way less than central a/c Spacepak or Unico

  3. It’s definetely doable .. talk to a few A/C contractors. I had a 3 zone split system put in which worked out great, and mostly didn’t impact any historical details..

  4. Look at “split units”, e.g. the Mitsubishi Slim systems http://www.mrslim.com/ . I can’t recommend them (I don’t have enough personal experience, although I’ve heard good things), but they’re appealing from an infrastructure standpoint: we’re putting the compressors on the roof and fan units in rooms: the pipes that link them are just a couple inches across, so they go into the walls pretty easily. They can be use as heat pump heating, as well, if you want.
