I need to replace about 20+ windows on the first floor of the house. They are original wood framed, double hung jobs and they leak like crazy. Friends and Consumer Reports speak highly of Certainteed windows and they are affordably priced (about $200). I have been told that I need to install aluminum capping before installing the windows but do not have the tools or know-how to do so. My question is: Do I need to install the capping? If so, does anyone know a person that I can hire to do only that? How much should it cost?

  1. I am the Pella Windows Replacement Specialist for Brooklyn/Queens. Our line of window which most certainly applies to your home is the Architect Series. We can get those with in aluminum clad or primed wood exteriors. If your looking to replace your old windows, I would be more then happy to come down and work an estimate for you. Wood windows in general are more money intially, but over the life of the window are not if you consider that you will have to periodically change lesser quality material windows.
If your interested in replacing your old windows I would be more then happy to come to you and prepare an estimate. You can reach me at jasonlutzpella@aol.com.

  2. I have read that vinyl windows make your property less desirable as they are kind of nasty, and also give off a lot of unpleasant chemicals during their manufacture. Apparently wood in the long run is both more attractive and thermally more effective. You can get the window panes themselves replaced with good double or triple glazed panes.

  3. I made the original post.

Can you tell me if capping is absolutely necessary? I am considering removing the original windows, refurbishing the window frames, and installing the vinyl replacement windows… Will that suffice?

  4. Where can you get these windows? I looked on the company’s website and it looks like they don’t assist people in the NE to find their windows. Can you just get your contractor to order them directly?

  5. Certainteed makes the finest solid vinyl replacement window around.
They have the BEST warranty there is. They give you a Lifetime Non Pro Rated warranty. LABOR & MATERIAL.

I no longer install windows. I just do Flat Roofs. But when I did, that’s the only replacemnt window That I used.

You can have your windows capped during or after the instalation. All be it, it’s easier to cap the windows during the instalation. That’s so because the window frame is wide open just after you remove your old windows. So you can cap the frames from inside the house. Instead of doing it off of a ladder.

If you cap the frames after the installation, you’ll need to wait for a few weeks for any exess calk on the frames to dry.

By the way your Certaintd Dealer should be able to refer you to someone who does window capping.
    And installers also.

They will refer you to someone they know is good and fair with their prices, for two reasons.
    1. They don’t want you tocome back complaining to them if your not happy. 2. And if the installer is too high with his pricing they won’t get your buisiness.

If you need any more feedback you can email or call me.

  6. Certainteed is an insulation company. I guess they probably make good windows. If you have old windows you should spend the money and have a professional install quality new windows (like Anderson, Marvin, Pella or Bonneville)
