do i need go get permits to move a shower + sink + bath in my house. I want to move them and the pipes from one room to another.

The toilet would stay where it is and be turned into a WC.

i’m going to hire an architect and work with a contractor, but do i need to go through the mess with the DOB if I’m not moving the toilet?

  1. Load of crap? Regardless of whether you agree with it or not, this is what more than half of brooklyn does when they make renovations. Maybe you are one of those annoying little DOB’s men that run around trying to sneak into people’s houses and nailing them with a fine so you can make your quota.

  2. I did the exact same thing this summer. Technically I think if you do move the plumbing you need permits, but no one I know gets permits for these things..I think you would only have a problem if by chance an inspector had the right to access your apt — so if someone filed a complaing — probably not terribly likely — or, if by some reason there were plans filed with the DOB showing the location of the bathroom, and then you went to sell. Even in that case I’m not sure if the repercussions would be terribly serious. I know that our neighbors finished their basement (for family use, not a rental), and did some major renovations and then decided to file a couple years after..i don’t think the cost was significantly more than having filed from the start. I’m sure some people would never do work without permits, as they would stay awake all night worrying, but we just couldn’t afford the extra $5-10k on top of our 12k renovation.
