I recently had my parlor shutters dipped. They came out great (props to Michael and Jennifer at Big Apple Stripping), but I want to replace the knobs and I’ve had trouble finding new ones. The original knobs are “males”, meaning the screw is already attached to the knob (kind of like a giant thumbtack) so the screw part doesn’t go all the way through the shutter and doesn’t have to be fastened on the other side of the wood. It seems that today all knobs are 2-piece “females” so I’d have to drill through the shutter. I’ve looked at Home Depot, Ikea, on-line, etc. but no one knows where to get “male” knobs. Has anyone else found them?

  1. Even better, there’s a store called Knobs and Knockers. Gotta love it.

Olde Goode Things on 24th St./6th Ave. in Manhattan also has millions of knobs you can look through.

  2. Anthopologie (women’s clothing store, but they have housewares and fancy hardware) sell specialty knobs with the screw attached. Mostly glass and ceramic, mostly from India, many quite lovely.
You can look at them online, and they a store (with bigger selection) on W. Broadway near Broome.

Love Big Apple Stripping…they made my reno so much easier….
