Repointing
We are attempting to repoint interior exposed brick ourselves. Any pointers on making this an easier or more effective process? We are finding it painstaking so far!

Old fashion way,
Buy a marshalltown finishing trowel, some marshalltown pointing tools(1/2″1/4″)depending how big the joints are, marshalltown trowel, mason brush and a rejointer if you like.
For the mix:
Pointing sand (type doble 00)
Mortar cement
Hydrated lime
Mix proportion:
5 parts sand
1 part mortar
1 part lime
Easy to buy all this at “all boros” 3rd st and 3rd ave in Bklyn.
Any other questions let me know.
Good luck.
Get a mortar bag, which is like the bag cake decorators use to squeeze the icing out, but much stronger. You could use a grinder to get the old mortar out, but it is easy to damage the brick if you dont have a steady hand. Also, be careful with the type of mortar that you use. If your house is around 100 years old or more then you should be using a lime based mortar. Any cement in your mortar and you risk making a mortar that is harder than your bricks and could lead to them cracking.
