fireplace
Here’s a picture of the fireplace that was discussed on December 11. Does this help identify the material?

Comments

  1. Thanks to everyone for helpful comments. The consensus is slate, and is reasonable, given the “feel” of the stone (smooth, with a few surface scratches). The grill has been soldered or caulked in. Note on the medallion – it appears to me that it fell off at some point and was rehung because it’s slightly crooked. None of the 4 fireplaces works yet; we will need to get someone in to open the flue etc.

  2. We have a very similar (almost identical) slate fireplace. Lovely pic. It seems like these were standard issue fireplace mantels back in the day. You are lucky to have the summer cover (the grille in the center). Ours is missing. Only ours is black/ gray (due to some pigment remaining from the white latex paint it had on it). Ours was faux marble finished too, with veins and all that are now stripped off. I’ve heard to wash with Spic and Span (contains TSP) and then put furniture polish. But, I haven’t done it yet. Is this a working fireplace?

  3. Looks like slate to me. Good chance that it was faux painted originally to look like marble. The tint it has now could be effects of the paint. Periodic rubbing with mineral oil will really bring out the beauty of slate.

  4. Get some 600 wet sand paper or higher and sand the thing down using water. Will remove surface imperfections and give it a nice polish.

  5. sorry to jump on this post but the piece at the top of the grill on this fireplace- our piece like that feel off and we need to stick it back on- any recommeds on something strong enough to hold it on- it’s very heavy. thanks and sorry but we have a similiar fireplace- our is slate also.

  6. Looks like slate. We have four marble and three slate mantles in our place. Our slate is more of the traditional charcoal color and has a bit more in terms of carving/relief – but it is definitely a common material. Ours are on the top floor and one in garden level. Marble ones are on the more detailed parlour and second floors.
