Interesting that I came to the same idea. Contractor suggested that fireplace can be made woodburining but I feel uncomfortable that our fireplace is too shallow. So, I was thinking about woodburning insert that will sort of “contain” burning inside, and partally resolves issues with drafts and smoke.
Problem is that I was not be able to find good looking wood burning inserts. Only one company in UK seems to have something that does look cheap 70s.
I keep looking
They are legal and they are more efficient (good for the environment, good for you). Some of them are a bit brassy/shiny but there are lots of nice ones too.

Thanks for your comments. The chimney/fireplace was sheetocked over, and we’re exposing it, mostly for aesthetic purposes, but my contractor says it should work fine for wood as is – he’ll put in a damper, etc. and expand the firebox. He hasn’t worked with inserts.

You can buy the inserts online. They are Legal in the US and NYC. They are more efficient, much more! You will also need to line your chimney and put a Cap on it. If you are handy you could probably do it for about $1000 or installed for $1600-2500.
Also, my original clay liner was checked and is intact – are these usable?
I wouldn’t burn in there if I were thinking of getting an insert.
Is your chimney closed and/or bricked over? If so better to leave it that way until you decide to start the work. A properly built chimney should draft even when not in use. So opening it will let warm air out through the chimney. It’s getting cold.
