My Park Slope bedroom has a beautiful tin ceiling and I sort of want to install track lighting so light can strike the walls and the area above my fireplace. Is this a horrible, horrible thing to do?

  1. Tin ceilings are easily and inexpensively replaced, and are rarely the original finish so even in the rediclously rigid rules of brownstoner it is okay to do as you please with them. Personally, I would never put track lighting on a tin ceiling or anywhere else for that matter.

  2. Tin ceilings were probably put up at some point AFTER your home was built because it was cheaper than fixing the plaster. I always felt that tin ceilings suck light out of a room, so are not worth saving if you are doing a reno. That being said – I don’t think track lighting is worth it to destroy them.

  3. I have the wire-mounted spots (two sets). I purchased one at Ikea a few years back and the second at “Expo.” They are easy to install; the only drawback is that they are not “hardwired”, although perhaps someone more electrically savvy than I could figure out how to do that. They look decent. I have old plaster ceilings and until I can afford to install really good lighting these do they job.

  4. you could mount the track lighting below the ceiling slightly on a wire. that way it’s installed on the walls not the ceiling. ikea used to make a good looking setup. not sure if they still carry them. they were mini spots on a wire track.

  5. Track lighting is always hideous. And how could you feel okay destroying the tin ceiling? You could remove the sconces and use torchiere floor lamps or just put one light into your ceiling like a simple chandelier which would spread gentle light, look nice in itself and not be a harsh downlight.

  6. I would not have to pull down the tin ceiling, just perforate it with two small holes to allow for the spots to come down. Right now there are sconces above the fireplace – and I f*cking hate them, I hate them hate them because sconces don’t permit me to put large pieces of art above the fireplace which the space cries out for. Thoughts????

  7. don’t get rid of that ceiling!
I had to, in my bedroom also, because it was really trashed. Now I look longingly at all the other tin ceilings…

yes I know you can put in new ones.
it’s not in our budget just yet.

  8. I had a similar challenge. Needed to light a wall and did not want to install anything on the ceiling. Went to Home Depot and found some relatively cool floor spots for about 20 bucks each. The fact that they’re relatively cool looking is totally inconsequential as they are completely invisible and hidden behind things. The general effect is pretty good, with the only downside being that they’re on the floor. For me, this was not a problem as the area between the spots and the wall that they light gets no traffic, but it might be an issue for you. Just a thought.
