We are totally frustrated having tried everything to fix a leak into our living room when it rains in a certain way. We have had the roofer come back many times to re-tar, we have cleared the gutter, re-pointed. etc. The ceiling is a mess and I want to paint the walls but until we find the source of the leak it seems silly to paint and then have it rain into the living room. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Just wanted to send a shout out to Nick & his partner – they put a new roof on our bedstuy house two weeks ago after those crazy rains (and FIVE new leaks!), even installed a new skylight in our hall and it is such a relief I can’t begin to tell you. It rained the other night and my husband and I high fived each other instead of watching the ceiling all night. Nick’s a good guy with a good heart, very fair and reasonable prices. (I’d be happy to offer a reference to anyone)

  2. The wind plays a big role on a leaky roof!!!!!
The leak could be comming from several places. And the entry point can be far away from where it shows up in your ceiling.

The water can be penetrating from several different places. Such as parapet walls, coping stones, flashings, a skylight, a vent pipe, a hole in your roofing membrane, etc.

The roof has to be examined by a roofer that has a lot of experience in “troubleshooting” roof leaks.

I have succesfully done thousands of roofs and
roof repairs, for over 30 years.

I have also been recomended on this site several times, and would be more than happy to do a free professional inspection for you!

  3. have you had windows replaced recently if so sometimes they make a funnel by not sealing aluminum capping right
also what is the condition of mortar between joints ?

  4. I had a leak in my living room, but could clearly see where the tar over my window awning was weathered. in any event, i had a roofer come over to flash and re-tar and it hasn’t been a problem since. his name is andrew collauzos and his # is 718-607-6938. i had gotten refered to him via another post on brownstoner.

  5. In a word – flashing. Weak points in the roof membrane often develop at the intersections of parapets and other protrusions. Remember, water travels before you find it on your ceiling.

    Good luck,
    Gary
