I got some mail from Keyspan about their service contract for heat, hot water, and central a/c. Anyone have any good or bad experiences with this? Seems to cost between $200 to $300

  1. I had the keyspan service contract after three no shows the guy showed up and told me it would cost me more…then never changed the main filter in my heating system or checked my AC units. What a waste of time and money

  2. I’ve had the Keyspan service for more than 10 years. Their rate has quadroupled. They do not check or change the anode in the water heater which results in a shortened life. Today, we waited on queue for 20-30 minutes to speak with a human when our water heater developed a leak. As Keysan had sold and installed the existing water heater we thought they could advise us on it’s warranty but they just referred us to the manufacturer.
They have fixed the heating system when it failed in a timely manner. They do offer to check out your heating system every year and seem to do an effective job in that area.
On the water heater problem, they will send somone within a 5.5 hour window this afternoon but, in the likely event that the unit needs to be replaced, will not do so before tomorrow. I’m beginning to believe that the water heater service is less than useless.

  3. I’ve had the Keyspan Service plan for 5 years. They have done a good job oiling the motor, checking the valves and the exhaust capability which is so important to monitor. I just had a problem with a lack of pressure in the system resulting in a lack of heat on the 4th floor. They came right out as promised, in the snowstorm and adjusted it. No cost, and a very nice person. I am more than pleased with the service.

  4. I have had a bad experience with service contracts. It was basically an excuse for the company to tell me all the things “wrong” with my boiler, including any number of code violations. There were no code violations — as an older unit, the gas boiler was grandfathered and completely within code. When I asked several other plumbers/hvac people about the changes they urged me to make, I was told that they were unnecessary at best, wastes of money at worst. My advice: avoid NY Heating, 354 Humboldt Street

  5. I have Keyspan service contract and they came in to do seasonal maintainence this year..which basically meant they did nothing…I then had another heating company (recommended by b’stoner readers) come in and look at some other issues I was having…they looked at the boiler and said “well this looks as though its never been serviced”…here’s what we would recommend you doing and, by the way, its going to up your efficiency significantly…you can email me if you want to know how the visit from the new company (which offers contracts) works out…

  6. if you have an old boiler (don’t ask how old, not sure) they may not actually agree to try to repair it when things start breaking. they just pressured us to replace it. we hired a local plumber and paid $750 to fix it rather than leave our tenants without heat for a matter of any more time while we wait to see what keyspan was going to propose in terms of replacement units. but replacing it was certainly gonig to cost more than 750 and take more than the 5 hrs it took to fix it. i think it’s a rip off, but maybe it just me. but that said who has time to fight some sort of bureaucratic system when you have a family of tenants without heat??

  7. I had it for a couple of years. They came out and did their seasonal maintenance, but since I didn’t have any major problems, it’s hard for me to say how good they would be in a pinch.
