Replacing Pocket Door Molding
We need to replace some molding for our pocket doors – we recently put the pocket doors back in (they were in our cellar), but the moldings for them are gone. The opening is arched and our 1878 Victorian brownstone has pine?? Moldings that are very large. Any suggestions as to who can do this…
We need to replace some molding for our pocket doors – we recently put the pocket doors back in (they were in our cellar), but the moldings for them are gone. The opening is arched and our 1878 Victorian brownstone has pine?? Moldings that are very large. Any suggestions as to who can do this type of work for a low/reasonable price? Anyone know who might have already made similar molding and have it in stock or a knife that’s already been cut for it?
That’s the problem, I’ve gotten estimates and I can’t afford to spend more than $2,000 just to get a knife cut to make the molding in the first place. That’s why I was wondering if someone had done this already and had a recommendation . . . ??
You have two basic choices, based on my experience with the same issue: (1) go to Dykes and look through their catalog and get something as close as possible (which will not be at all close) and just paint it a pretty white and be done with it; or (2) spend BUCKS DELUXE trying to have a specialist custom-build nice pine moldings to match. There are people that do this — they trace what you have and build to match — but you are talking about big bucks.
