I know, I know, re-brownstoning the facade would be so much prettier, but times are tight. And I’ve seen neighbors shell out 60 grand and have cracks and chips in a couple years. So, we’re patching and painting. My question is, has anyone found a paint that resembles the soft chocolate brown of the unpainted stone? Or at least comes close? (and we’d prefer to err on the dark side of brown rather than the light). Thanks.

  1. If you are going to paint your brownstone facade, it is *very* important that you use a “breathable” paint that has been formulated specifically for masonry and not a regular exterior grade paint (as per the other suggestions) which are meant for wood and metal. Using regular alkyd or latex paint will severely compromise your facade as it traps moisture in the stone (flaking, scaling, and spalling of the stone will result over time.) One product that I can recommend is the Silin Paint series, available from Cathedral Stone Products. (www.cathedralstone.com) I believe they offer some level of custom color matching. Another company with a similar product is Keim, but their products are hard to get in the US. These paints cost more, but they will last. (as will your facade.)

[Disclaimer: I have no relationship to Cathedral Stone other than the fact that I sometimes use their products in my professional work.)

  2. HARRY WEINSTEIN IN BED STY HAS BROWNSTONE COLORS BROWNSTONE BROWN LIMESTONE ECT USE ONE OF THESE COLORS OFF THE CHART AND ITS HARD TO TELL IF THE HOUSE IS PAINTED.

  3. Benjamin Moore had an exterior flat colour called “brownstone” which is pretty close.
Pintchik is pretty good about colour matching.
