I am completely rewiring my house. I plan to have the electrician run new cable and phone wire together with the electrical, but I’m wondering if I should also run other wiring in anticipation of future technologies. Or will the future be wireless?Any techies out there who can offer some advice?

  1. I’ve managed to save up roughly $70517 in my bank account, but I’m not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?

  2. Liberty cable has some great wire. Most rooms will need 2 Cat5e cables – one for internet and one for telephone, as well as coaxial for cable tv. If you are interested in bundled cable Comscope Uniprise might be worth looking into. I used it and so far so good. Wire is cheap and easy to install into open walls. Chaseways are good, but if you are likely to use cable, do yourself the favor and just put in in before the sheetrock.

  3. I don’t think there is any practical use for fiberoptic >today<, but the expectation is that in the future there will be. Keep in mind, they've been saying that for over 10 years. There are advantages to wired networks and video coming in from a central location in the house, but for many people, these are issues not worth worrying about..

  4. To the person who wished they had included fiberoptic cabel. I’m rewiring my home and have come across bundled wire including fiberoptic — what would you use that for?

  5. I have no tech skills, yet I think its impossible to anticipate what kind of cable to run all over your house. What about the wireless lighting systems that use radio waves? I spent alot of money 10 years ago to run computer cable up and down my house and now I own an Apple that uses the Airport system. I have a Bose Stereo that has a radio wave remote that i can operate from any place in the house. The telephone jacks I had installed in every room have never even had a phone plugged into them. Come to think of it i get my internet through my mobile phone now as well. I use Vonage for a “land line” Why not run pvc pipe as a chase and leave it empty. Save your money. Ask any carpenter/furniture designer about the history of the home office in the last 10 years and they will tell you to buy a nice old fashioned desk and put your laptop on it. Now you have a designated home office ready for the 21st century.

  6. we used a structured bundle of two cat5e and two coax. i wish that i had added fiberoptic as well. check out http://www.smarthome.com and also hometech.com

it is worth while to have a consultant involved because while most electricians can run the wire they won’t understand the overall design.

remember to run a coax to your roof from the main box if you want antennae radio or tv or even satellite.

another piece of advice: have your electrician mark the walls through which the structured wiring runs so that no one later pierces the cable with a nail gun.

  7. I put in something called “structured wiring”. It’s basically 2 cat-5’s and 2 coax’s in one bigger wire. I ran that to 6 locations from one central location. You really need a “star configuration” (not daisy chain) so that you can do most things you’d want. Read “smart homes for dummies”. All the wires and panals cost about $500, and it was almost negligable for the contractor to run it.
