The garden floor of my brownstone has bars in the window. The bars date back to the 1890s and therefore leave very little space between the window and the bars for an air conditioner. Does anyone know where I can purchase a small, very very slim air conditioner? Apparently they exist but I haven’t been able to locate one.

  1. There are A/Cs made to fit the narrow space between your window and the bars but I fear it may be too late in the season to find any of them. Most manufacturers have sold out of their most popular models by now — and, in this neck of the woods, those narrow A/Cs sure are popular. I have a Carrier, btw. Not the greatest (a bit noisy for my liking) but it fits!

  2. I bought the Soleus portable a/c units for my brownstone and they work great. just vent the two tubes out window. They have wheels. Then you can close they window up in winter.

  3. Someone on my block had the old bars altered to allow an AC to fit sticking out the window — they were able to keep the original bars, just somehow having a box welded on that matched. I’ve heard the slim AC goes for about $500.

  4. you can try a “ductless” air conditioner like the “Mr. Slim” by Mitsubishi. They are not cheap, but you wont have a unit in the window.

  5. we had the same problem on our garden level – get an upright/portable from pc richards. tubes vent out the window and it works great, so far.

  6. you may not find one … you can build a sort of wooden box that will allow the a/c to protrude inside… I had a handy man do that for me…worked well.
