Does anyone know whether it is idiotic to consider a glass “wall” instead of a banister? I am trying for a contemporary look. Any idea what that would cost?

  1. There is a place on Delancy by the WillyB They doalot of restuarant work. I think the least expensive way would be to use the manufactured system of tubes and brackets that you see in many commercial settings. I don’t know how that would look in a home setting, maybe too industrial. Do you mean like what you see at the Time Warner Buildings Mall?

  2. I’ve seen some successful modern staircases with horizontal steel wires used instead of spindles. But this was with new risers and treads too. Not quite sure how the mix of old and new would work in your case.

  3. it’s expensive. it would need to be at least 3/8″ thick tempered glazing (1/4″ is a little thin for this and would more prone to breaking). i had a shower door install for $2,500, similar glazing required and the size of it was only 3′-0″ x 4′-6″
