2 Fireplace Questions
I’ve seen brownstones with heat damage and discoloration to the wood mantle around the fireplace. Does anyone know how to prevent this? Has anyone tried “gas logs?” Do they meet code requirements in NYC?

They were not originally gas. Most old homes originally had coal burning furnaces that distributed heat through the house from grills that look like fireplaces.
If these fireplaces were originally gas, then why would they need new flues? If the gas lines are still live, I wonder if they could not be used.
Thanks!
Most original fireplaces were gas logs (not actual working fireplaces) so they had a small outlet to the roof. Over the years, some people think that these are actually working fireplaces, so they burn newspaper, wood, charcoal, etc., in them. You can end up burning down your house.
If you have wood surrounding the fireplace, then it’s a good bet that the “fireplace” is more decorative than functional. Yes, you can use gas in the fireplace in NYC, but it needs a proper flue. Look in the phone book, and get some estimates and ideas.
