the metal covered shutes that go down to the cellar in the front and back of our house (sorry the correct term escapes me), the metal covers need to be replace. everytime we’ve had them open to load in things to the cellar they create a pleasant amount of light to the otherwise windowless space. we are going to make the cellar
an open and clean space, smooth concrete floors, fix the walls and arches etc. i would love to be able to have that light down there all the time. i can’t figure out a solution because we do want to keep the covers operational so glass wouldn’t work and also it would have to be a secure solution. is there anyway to do this and have all
the function, safety and light? thanks for any insights.
I asked insuladome advised against using their sky hatch as a celler door they said they don’t offer any security- it would have solved the problem though
hi thank you for the info- about the insuladome.
unless i didn’t see it on their website- how will you insure security and also will you have the one that only opens partially? they do sound like a good solution except for the security part.
check out insuladome. They come rounded or flat and we are planning on replacing our rusty metal hatch with one.
my contractor sugggested that bubble thing at the time to me, and I wasn’t that interested. You can even get it with an automatic open/close feature based on whether it’s raining. I remember seeing their website, but I didn’t keep the info..maybe P.S. Glass would know.
i haven’t found anyone yet but will let you know. should be making decisions in aug.
I saw someone (I think on the north side of Carrol St. between 6th & 7th Avenue) who used what looked like a plexiglass bubble to let some light into the cellar. As I recall, security was provided by gates which were just below the bubble.
If you are using a contractor to redo the cellar, I would love to have his (her?) name.
