ELECTRICIAN FOR OLD SCARY WIRING
I’ve got a rat’s nest of old black cloth covered electrical wiring to get sorted out, and my old standby electrical nice guy has passed away. Every other freelance electrician I know can work new construction but shrinks from the box in my basement…any suggestions for a reliable and reasonable electrician, experienced with old house…

THANK YOU
I would avoid David Hale at all costs – he is highly unreliable and irresponsible. He gave us an estimate and made appointments with Con Edison that he never showed up for. Never returned calls or emails. We’re very reasonable and gave him a second chance, same again. Stay away from David Hale at Engine Electric.
Funny, I’ve tried getting Bob Ryan a couple of times over the years and the man is JUST TOO BUSY! My contractor friend who uses him on huge jobs laughed at me when I asked about him for my last round of rewiring/new outlets needed…
GOOD LUCK indeed!
Everyone out there should call Bob Ryan at 718-965-2882 or 917-451-4054. He’s been working in the Park Slope area for 25 years and knows these old buildings inside and out. From my experience that means much less demo work and repair since he knows how and where to snake wires. He did a tremendous job on our P.S. brownstone. Many of these old houses are wired with reverse polarity and that seems to confuse many of the other electricians that we’ve encountered. He’s skilled, neat, very professional and also very busy. Good lick.
Quite right about old wiring — but that rat’s nest turned out to be the old fuses that lead to the breaker box, which was put in decades ago . . . which didn’t occur to my kitchens and bathrooms guy who was the first person to take a look and run away!
Does everyone else have a creepy metal box in their basement that leads to the (nice, clean and organized) breaker box?
I used Supercharged Electric from Staten Island as my subcontractor when I did renovation work. They are licensed and insured and do alot of work in Park Slope. Everyone always thanked me. They can run lines through a house without destroying mouldings and old plaster. NOTE: You really don’t want to use a cheap electrician when working with the main breaker box in the basement. Most rat’s nests happen over time with more and more circuits being added as our needs increased. If you still have glass fuses maybe it’s time to upgrade your service.
Paul at WCK Electric was lovely and responsive and MUCH more reasonably priced than Phong, although I got a better deal (and a job well done, this am) from another nice man named Rafael. I don’t have permission from him to post the number, but I can totally recommend him.
THANKS!
That’s exactly what happened with Phong — outrageous quote, but prompt and pleasant!
Yes, he was quick and sent someone right away to do the estimate- but he was twice the price of the one I actually used. I used Paul 917-939-4956- guys were fabulous and are coming back this week to do additional work.
Anyone familiar with Phong Nguyen electrician?
He’s listed on ParkSlopeParents.com…
I’ve called David Hale that was suggested elsewhere on this board, but haven’t gotten a call back yet. My breaker blew at the busy time of year . . .
THX for any recommends/swearing off you can offer!
