Code for Backyard Fence Height?
Does anyone know the height limit for a fence in the backyard of a Clinton Hill Brownstone? There is an existing chainlink fence with the nasty green plastic inserts. Also, suggestions regarding sound insulation in general in rear yards would be helpful.
Thanks
From my research I found 6 ft.
I was told this was for fire code.
We asked buildings last year-6ft is max. The material that you use will determine whether you need a permit. wood, vinyl and chain link do not require a permit. If yours is higher than 6ft and your neighbors decide that it’s not to their liking, they can call buildings and you will be removing it so I’d stick to the right height.
I think it is 5 feet. Eight feet is not code and you could call 311 and rat them out if you want.
We had a fence put up last year here in Cobble Hill. We found out the standard rule in 6 feet (like the Home Depot 6×6 premaid versions). Seems lots don’t really abide by it though. Our neighbors fence at the back is 8 ft. They are putting up a new one – same height. The old fene we replaced was over 6 ft. We were definitely able to find people to put up higher than 6 foot fences. We opted for a 6 ft cedar fence with a 1 ft trellace on top.
I do interiors not fences but it is usually a 6 foot fence in rear max but check with building dept to make sure
