  1. we replaced an existing skylight over the stairwell with something bigger and added two more (one in the bedroom and another in the bathroom) — they were some of the best improvements we made. The light is fantastic. The skylights are industrial style (chicken wire and aluminum), which besides the venting issue, also makes a huge racket when it rains. I wish we had splurged on the more-expensive bubble skylights. By the way, while they were up there, we had them install an attic fan in the third floor ceiling and add two mushroom vents on the roof. Now that was the best improvement we made!

  2. We had two old-style tin/chicken wire glass skylights that we had to replace. We put in a new chicken wire glass skylight over our stairway and a bubble type in the bathroom. I have to say, the bubble type does not allow the same amount of light in and our bathroom is darker than it was. The chicken wire glass lets in a huge amount of light. However, I believe these are venting skylights, which will lose heat in the winter, this is why we got the bubble style for the bathroom, so the bathroom would not be cold. We just crank it open after we use the shower (we did not put a vent in there, since we had a venting skylight prior and all our electrical was done when we made the decision to replace the skylight). If you like a lot of light, I would get the old style. Luckily, the venting one we have in our hallway is above the attic, which is closed off from our hallway by glass, so we don’t lose heat through there.

You could also do a search for “solatube,” which is a new type of skylight which requires very little opening in your roof, but allows a lot of light because it is somehow refracted through the tube. I would search for that, especially if you need to make new holes in your roof.

  3. I put a rather large (48″ square) skylight over the tub in our master bath on the top floor, but decided not to put it in the bedroom. The light is absolutely gorgeous in the bathroom, but I didn’t want all that light in the bedroom. Also have one over the top of the stairs.
I like the option of sleeping in on the weekends, and I felt we would wake up with the sun. Now I’m wondering if I was wrong. The light it brings to bathroom is great, and maybe I could have gotten a special curtain made for skylights.
I special-ordered mine through a tinsmith, but then felt stupid when I saw them in-stock for the same price at Home Depot & Lowes. I got the bubble-top kind, so water won’t build up when it rains.
If you want the old look of tin/chicken wire glass you would have to order it through the tinsmith. The guy at 6th St., just north of 4th Ave. is good.
