Boiler Room ventilation
The basement of my brownstone has a separate room that includes the hot water heater and the gas boiler for the furnace. I was recently told that the room was improperly ventilated to the outside, and that I needed to have ducts installed to correct the problem. Anyone know the codes about this? Any recommendations…

Yes, I ran into this code issue during our renovation. We had to install a pretty large vent to bring outside air into the basement. Apparently, this is a relatively new issue, as not too many of my contractors had ever seen this requirement.

Yes, that is correct about DOB codes, and there’s not much room to get around this. Usually, a company that specializes in HVAC can perform this function. Depending on the layout of the house, and where fresh air intake can be brought in to the mech room, this can be either a minor or major undertaking.
