New (Altered) Building at 370 11th Street
Here’s another development that pushed the boundaries of the definition of “alteration” in DOB-speak: What was once a one-story garage at 370 11th Street is now becoming a three-story, four-family residential building. In their defense, it does look like they saved a few of the bricks from the original structure. GMAP P*Shark DOB

Brick fits in better then new glass monstrosities.
How does one research the developer? I’d live there!
Stoop would look better, but it isn’t handicap accessible, so that would be a problem to get approved, without mechanical lift.
not terrible, at least it has brown double hung, a favorite. The brick choice is not that bad either. At leaset there is no F word all over the place.
actually it looks like a castrated browntone. it looks really stupid without a stoop. stoops being the best things about brownstone brooklyn. i mean, if it was a garage, fine without it then, but that is just dumb.

What I find interesting is that the people who built in the brownstone period, without any of the modern materials, methods or mechanical aids available today created such beautiful buildings and streetscapes and most everything created today is hideous and has absolutely no regard for its surrounding buildings. Even apartment buildings from the twenties and thirties are generally beautiful but the aesthetic sense is totally lost in post war America.

What cities are worse? I am sure some Chinese backwaters cities have lower standards for architecture, but certainly not Paris, Miami, Portland, Chicago or Vancouver?
Pound for pound on average new construction in New York is the worst I have seen. There are some wonderful new buildings in New York obviously. I even like Karl Fischer buildings, but way too many buildings are crappy orange brick Fedder specials. The new construction on 4th Avenue in particular seems to be intentionally ugly. Like Soviet Era ugliness.
I believe that new low rise developments can be affordable, modern and yet still architecturally pleasing. Great lower scale architecture was built in New York in the past, I think it can be again. We only lack imagination and commitment.
I find the modesty of this building to be somewhat attractive.
infests rather.
This area looks like a slum already. How is this any worse than the crap covered with aluminum siding that invests the area?
