Is Brooklyn Heights' Long-Awaited Hotel Bossert Reboot Ready to Open?

Was a Fourth of July bash a sign that the long-closed Hotel Bossert is finally nearing completion?

A neighbor reached out to Brownstoner via Twitter with some video and a question about the party.

Did the rooftop bar at the Bossert Hotel open? Huge crowd tonight and very loud (video is one block away and several floors lower but you can clearly hear the tunes).

Built in 1909, the hotel at 98 Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights is a survivor from the neighborhood’s days as a busy hotel destination spot and social hub. After decades of glamorous events, many of them hosted at the Marine Roof, a two-story roof-top restaurant and club, the Bossert hit hard times in the 1960s.

In 1988, the Jehovah’s Witnesses bought the Bossert and began a meticulous restoration of the building, including the ornate lobby. The religious organization sold the hotel to David Bistricer of Clipper Equity and Joseph Chetrit of the Chetrit Group in 2012, who said they planned to renovate and open a boutique hotel.

It has been under construction ever since, and several anticipated opening dates have been pushed back. In March, a rep for the developer who is managing the project told the Brooklyn Paper they are searching for a new operator and hope to open sometime this summer.

A temporary certificate of occupancy was issued in April, indicating an opening could be imminent. We have reached out to the owners for comment.
