Crown Heights North’s art deco stunner on 1117 Eastern Parkway, most recently the location of a Popular Community Bank branch, will reopen as a Modell’s Sporting goods, a tipster has informed Brownstoner.

Modell’s signage is already up above the building’s main entrance and front windows, as shown in the top picture. The building, built in 1929 by architect Holmes & Winslow, was originally home to the East New York Savings Bank (a confusing title, as the neighborhood is not, in fact, East New York). It was designated a landmark in March, and retains many of its original features, despite undergoing several alterations in its lifetime.

Modell’s has had a prominent location for years on Atlantic Avenue near the Barclays Center, but lost the spot to eminent domain to make way for the Atlantic Yards/Pacific Park development. This location is also very prominent.
