babs- since it’s landmarked they ca’t change it. Not only that it would ruin it. One of the reasons the Cyclone is so scary is that it’s so clickety-clackity. They did a survey on the scariest rollercoasters in the US and the Cyclone is still one of the top. I love that thing!
Rob, you could start that online in a jiffy. The MTA would probably sue you to shut it down though. But then you could sell it to Google before they get the chance.
The Cyclone has been landmarked since 1988. I’m sceptical of anything Bloomberg wants to do with anything – hope he’s not intent on turning into a metal coaster. Wooden coasters rule!
I know Matt Pintchik- great guy. They do a lot of charitable work too.
Glad to hear the City is finally recognizing the value of old Coney Island attractions like the Cyclone. Those were the things that gave Coney Island it’s unique personality. Please do not make it Las Vegas on the Atlantic- ugh, no.
I actually admire what the Pintchiks have done with their Bergen St. storefronts, because it enables them to support some of the sweetest rent-stabilzed apartments I know of above them. Seriously, who wouldn’t like a landlord who owns a hardware store and loves dogs?
The “Bobos on Bergen” piece is spot on! (However, I admit that I actually admire what’s become of that block. Guess I’m a Bobo.)
When I was little, I called it “she-shebs” — but I’m pretty sure that was my own unique pronunciation.
“union contracts need to be renegotiated”
Hope Paladino would have the same aggression towards Wall St and the foreclosure snafu. Also hope he wouldn’t fall for hooker bait.

Yeah, it most likely is as a result of speaking fast. Germanic languages have a tendency to combine words into new ones…
Pretty much, just like I wrote it above. When I was 3 or 4 years old I probably DID think it was Sheep-shed Bay
