  1. “I love that show. When I’m not home on Saturdays nights I tape it if I can.”

A chick from the BX was recently on there (Grand Concourse address). Read about it in the Daily News. Stabbed a boyfriend to death years ago.

  2. The sad part is that often the cops are just scared kids themselves, and operate in a panic mode without thinking. Police should have better training in dealing with situations in which they think their lives may be in danger, so that they can learn to shoot to (temporarily) disable a potential shooter, not kill him. Where would you shoot for this? The knee? Foot? Hand?

  3. East NY and MM, couldn’t agree with you more. That “gun” has turned out to be a pack of smokes, or a wallet containing ID, or a toy being toted by a 14 year-old far too often for a shoot to kill policy to be a good or humane one. Sigh. I’m so depressed. Think I’ll go for a walk in the hot, humid molasses that is outdoors right now and pick up Tate.

  4. “MM…only those who are clearly brandishing a gun and refuse to drop it. If cops are poorly trained to distinguish a gun from anything else then that’s a problem.”

What if it’s dark and the “gun” can’t be clearly distinguished? What if the person is mentally ill? What if the “gun” is actually a toy (which has happened)? There are too many variables involved to adhere to a “shoot first and ask questions later” policy, which as MM notes often winds up in tragedy.

There has always been crime and will always be crime as long as there are human beings inhabiting the earth. We should always try to look for better ways to enforce laws and deal with criminals, but simplistic “just shoot them” strategies are not the answer.

There’s a scene in “The Maltese Falcon” where private detective Sam Spade shares a drink with two policemen. He toasts by saying “Success to crime.”

  5. “Reminds me of the guy from America’s Most Wanted, who incessantly refers to murderous sociopaths as “creeps” and “jerks”.

If I am not mistaken “that guy” is someone whose child was kidnapped by a serial killer and when found had been beheaded. Somehow I think the word “perpetrator” seems a little milquetoast for him.

  6. MM…only those who are clearly brandishing a gun and refuse to drop it. If cops are poorly trained to distinguish a gun from anything else then that’s a problem.

I could lay the problem at the feet of the prison system maybe because anyone who goes in is likely to come out worse. If one life is saved by “shoot to kill” it’s a good thing. These lowlives that carry guns and have no mentality for human life just need to be eliminated.
