We were led to believe that the storefront at 639 Vanderbilt Avenue would become a Japanese market (specifically the rumor was that it might even be a Jas Mart.) The reality is a little less exciting: a run-of-the-mill fruit and vegetable spot has moved in. Still, not a bad addition to the block.

  1. Just felt I needed to come back and add, after going in again since opening day, that it’s quite a nice little shop! And they actually do have quite a lot of Asian food stuff. All kinds of Asian sauces, including Siracha and Sambal (which if you like hot sauce and dont know these, you must try!), tons of noodles, frozen potstickers, tofu, mochi ice cream, and so on. Oh, and homemade kimchi that is excellent (after you take it home and let it sour a bit!)). And their prices seem pretty reasonable. Seems like they are still stocking their shelves a bit, so it will be interesting to see what shape it ultimately takes. But so far, I’m very hopeful! The produce is pretty good, too, in the run-of-the-mill korean green grocer kind of way (which is to say clean, fresh, decent selection). Hope they do great business!

  2. Wow, fruit and vegetable stands are “run of the mill”??? I am desperate for one in walking distance to State @ Flatbush. Closest thing I can find are a couple small markets with a little produce in Ft Greene. And of course, Pathmark, but it can be a big job, getting in and out of there.

Ironically, there is what I consider a fake-food-factory (GNC) near me. Must be much more money in “Up your Mass!” than in actual food.

  3. Yes, it’s a decent addition. I’ve always thought it was weird that there’s no “green grocer” in Prospect Heights. But I hope they step it up a bit, or they won’t last. There’s a Met just down the block, so unless their “fruit and vegetable” selection is truly outstanding or they up their stock of harder to find groceries, I don’t see why many people would shop there instead. I don’t think there was even a deli or anything. It’s a tiny space.
