  1. I often read while I walk (in brooklyn though, manhattan seems ridiculous – too many obstacles, i.e. tourists). I’d say that even with this handicap, I’m more aware of my surroundings than most people. I consider myself an urban walker of the highest degree and take much pride in this distinction.

  2. I’d also like to highlight the folks who walk and read or walk and text at the same time. I was walking down 35th St in Manhattan the other day and noticed 4 people walking and READING NOVELS…completely oblivious to their surroundings. They never look up to see what’s going on or who they might be crashing into. I’m glad that people feel so safe that they can read or text while walking. But it’s pretty stupid if you ask me.

  3. No wonder all this lawlessness, uncivility exists — all those idiots (SP, NG etc.) on Fox (who get on every legitimate news station as well) keep talking about “your freedom” and how government want to take it away. Too many people think they should be able to do what they want, when they want and others be damned. No consequences. I sound like an old coot….

  4. dittoburg – i can’t take anymore of it. this is just constant in our society, and the wrong doers when called on it, act like, who me? what? you can’t tell me i’m wrong.

the other day on spring st. this guy pulls out into the crosswalk on his moped blocking the whole crosswalk right in front of me while he has a red light. Because he didn’t look either way, he not only didn’t see me, but he also didn’t see a tottering old man crossing the street while leaning on a cane! after i yelled at him, he started yelling at me! really?? it’s cool to jam an old man between a moped and a car? i got the last word in though, a delightful, simple one – “douche.”

there’s a lawlessness that maybe isn’t new, but people are endlessly justifying their unethical and/or criminal behavior by indicating that they have the right to do this because it’s BETTER FOR THEM! and they make these demands without any irony or remorse. sure, i’m breaking the law, but I needed this benefit. (see my position on illegal immigrants, hiring of illegal immigrants, and the “relevant to this blog” group of a**holes – commercial landlords who rent pos spaces that aren’t up to code to residential tenants including those with children. folks knowingly renting commercial spaces as a place to live, clearly are in the self-entitled douche bag category as well.)

if we allow low level illegal behavior to go unpunished, it sends out the message that lawlessness is OK, and then the behavior escalates.

  5. I’m so sick and tired of the word ‘accident’.
It is not an accident when you are texting on your phone. It’s not an accident when you make an illegal turn as the person did who killed a motorcyclist on West St in Manhattan the other day.It is negligence and there should be stiff penalties for these actions.
Maybe then people will take the privilege of driving more seriously.

  6. like I was saying the other day – I think its a sign of huge selfishness – the world revolves around me and my dramas/ I expect people to clear up after me mentality.

Last week some dingdong stopped as she got off the bottom of the escalator in Staten Island mall (yes I was there) to yell on her cellphone at someone (no doubt a second dingdong). The escalator, completely unaware of the importance of the argument situation, continued to deliver humans to the bottom and there was a pile up.
