  1. Quote: by Biff Champion, 9:35 AM- tybur6, did Mr. B decide that the final g was to be dropped for all login names and replaced with a “6”?

Biff Champion 6 ( aka Boeuf Champignon ), that was quick thinking!

  2. I’ve never really understood what could be in these tests that make them harder for people of color to pass. Aren’t the most important qualities — common sense and brawn — color-blind? On the other hand, it’s self-evident there is racism at work in the FDNY. As East New York says, “count the number of black and latino firefighters you see.” If the NYPD has been able to change their ranks to better reflect the population of the city, why can’t FDNY too? I suspect it’s a closed “club” for white working class guys in much the same way the carpenters union is.

  3. Etson and Dittoburgh,

Thanks — that’s how I thought you said it. Phew!

I’m probably not going to Glasgow. I’ll be in Edinburgh for the Fringe for a few days, then hired a car to cruise around the central and western Highlands. If I had more time (which I easily could have if I picked a different date when booking the flight! errrgh), I’d go further north in my driving… but I don’t, so I won’t.

  4. So would I, Dave. I suspect the tests are not only culturally baised, but applied, tested and evaluated in patently unfair ways. There is clearly a problem. Just walk down to your local firehouse and count the number of black and hispanic firefighters you see. Based on my encounters with firefighters, I can’t believe there is any particular skill that white folks have that makes them better equipped to fire-fight than blacks and latinos.
