Michael & Ping’s, the new “modern Chinese takeout” place on 3rd Avenue, is now in its soft-opening stage. We stopped in for their $5.75 lunch deal and were very pleased with the General Tso’s chicken — a hearty portion of tender chicken in a well-balanced, sweet-and-salty brown sauce, served with a generous side of greaseless fried rice. It’s Americanized Chinese for sure, but it’s not greasy and the prices seem very fair to us. Orders are placed and picked up through a takeout window that offers views of the immaculate kitchen.
There’s no table service, but owner Michael’s dad was insisting on delivering dishes on opening day — while Michael sheepishly told patrons not to tip him. The proud parent explained that he built the space himself, using recycled bricks in the walls, recycled concrete in the floors, and the original beams in the ceilings. Their eco-friendly decisions paid off, as the Michael & Ping’s Facebook page reports: “Michael & Ping’s is Brooklyn’s first green certified restaurant! We got our 2-star certification with 132.25 points (100 points needed).” Has anybody else stopped by? GMAP

Bummer…We went by today for lunch and they were closed. Looks like their pre-launch was just for a few days and now they’re getting the rest of the menu together for a grand opening. I can’t wait to try it!
I second DIBS! Please open a Michael & Ping’s in (SW) Bed-Stuy! I will ‘invest’ by buying lots of take-out.
The ONLY thing that sucks about 420 blackbirds is that I wanted to get a whole pie for a party I was going to that night, but they only do whole pies with 2 days advance notice. Now I know.
I agree Pigeon…the vibe was so nice I could have sat around there for hours.
This is cause for Gowanus celebration!
As far as Four and Twenty Blackbirds goes, their pies are great, but my favorite thing about them is their vibe.
The peaceful easy feeling is a great respite.

I had the nectarine blueberry. Every single variety sounds delicious and I can’t say I’ve been much of a pie person in the past.
BTW, they are CLOSED this weekend because they’re going to be at a friends wedding making pies for them.
