>This is Carl Country. Love It or leave It.
Well, based on his speech in Williamsburg tonight, dibs, I think he’d prefer that you leave the country. Although of course if he were to be elected, I’d probably go right along with you (or at least to another state). Pataki’s election after Mario Cuomo was an important factor in my moving to France in 1995; I only came back to work on saving the country from Bush and Cheney.
Benson, you are right. I don’t know mafia history at all! Ha. Thanks for the lesson. The last time I watched Godfather movies I thought, yuck. These guys were horrible, why did I ever watch that stuff (except for Al Pacino).
One example of a story from my father about how ruthless Anastasia was. At one time, the Mafia, via the Longshoremen’s Union (which was in their hip pocket) planned to loot a ship on the Long Pier in Red Hook. The police planned to break it up, charging the pier mounted on horses. Anastasia was tipped off about the police. As the horses approached, he had guys throw out long nails on the pier, crippling them.
According to my father, he was as ruthless and violent as a person came.
Joey Gallo was a minor player, and he certainly didn’t originate the 5 families. The originator of the the mafia in Red Hook was Albert Anastasia. He rose to power by organizing the Italian longshoremen of Red Hook, who were previously being shaken down by the Irish. My father can regale folks of Anastasia’s reign in Red Hook, when he was growing up there.
My mom grew up with Joey Gallo, and was a classmate.
Joey Gallo was gunned down in Umberto’s Clam House in Little Italy. The big boys had had enough of his antics. What pissed them off in particular was his overtures to the rising black gangs, and his irreverent ways.
I had to leave early today. I spent the whole day putting my mother-in-law’s house back together, after I had her house painted and new carpet put in. Her house was really getting run down, and I couldn’t see her living like that.
I’m exhausted!!
BTW: do I get any points from my “fan club” for breaking my back the past few weeks getting my frail old mother-in-law’s house up to snuff?
Looks like I mmissed alot of action today. Some comments:
-CGar. Wish I had some advice to offer, but I haven’t faced such a situation, and don’t know what to say, except best of luck.
-Bxgrl. Hope you’re feeling better soon.
-Snappy. Really sorry to hear this. I hope your luck turns around soon. My daughter went through 8 months of unemployment, and she just found something. Hopefully you will too.
If you need to leave, don’t you think it’s better to go somewhere where the economy is strong? I think PA is more stagnant than NY. How about someplace like Texas? Alot of jobs there. Could be for just a couple of years till you find something back in NYC. Anyway, ggod luck!!
The sun turned cold over President Street and the town of Brooklyn mourned
They said a mass in the old church near the house where he was born
And someday if God’s in heaven overlookin’ His preserve
I know the men that shot him down will get what they deserve
Joey, Joey
King of the streets, child of clay
Joey, Joey
What made them want to come and blow you away?

I make good spaghetti sauce. How hard can it actually be for someone????

Well, actually in the case of the Gallo gang, one recorded instance of spaghetti sauce-making proved deadly. When the Gallos were holed up on Pres st. (on their mattresses) against the Profacis, they sent someone out to stock up on sausages and other spaghetti sauce ingredients. (I found it intriguing that the gang had its own cook, btw.) The poor gansta was gunned down, all for spaghetti sauce ingredients.
One instance in the Godfather movies may have copied this event, but it is a long time since I watched those movies.

Prezanon and all;
The history of Albert Anastasia. Note that this all happened way before Joey Gallo showed up on the scene.

Al Capone grew up on Garfield Place between 4th and 5th Aves.
CGar- I cut my losses once with a person such as you describe. The difficult part was that I also lost things I cared about.
