  1. Also Rob, it’s very possible they have made a mistake. But you have to get advice and deal with it – these things don’t go away on their own, even if the IRS is wrong.
You have to find someone who can try to prove to them that they are wrong and get them to agree.
If in the end it turns out they are right and you do owe the tax then you will have to work out some kind of payment plan with them.

(As an example, I am the treasurer of a non-profit. A couple of years ago. the IRS tried to charge us five figures in taxes from which we were exempt. We had to provide written proof that we are a non-profit and not liable for the tax they were trying to charge us. It took a lot of letter writing but they ended up agreeing that we did not owe anything.)

  2. Rob,
You need to speak to an accountant that deals with the IRS first. Then you should contact the IRS if you think they have made a mistake (there should be a phone number on the letter) BUT only do that after you have spoken with a professional. I am not an accountant but can ask around a couple of folks who may know someone cheap.
5 years is a long time for them to go back – usually they don’t go back more than three, and it’s weird you have not had a letter before (maybe you did but it went to an old address?).
Does the letter say what they think you owe the tax for? Is there a check list attatched to the demand with some of the boxes checked? Is it federal tax on the preceding year’s state refund?

  3. “Biff saw him at Union Hall. Not sure if they were introduced.”

Yes, I met him at the end (no rewrites please). He was shy but definitely a handsome fellow. And obviously he must be a very patient and tolerant man.
