NYPD History Brooklyn Brainery

While today’s relationship between police officers and the public is often a complicated one, on a macro level the history and development of the NYPD is fascinating.

New York’s law enforcement has had to come a long way to cultivate the organized, citywide police force that is today’s NYPD.

At Brooklyn Brainery’s “The True History of the NYPD” event, urban planner and former journalist Patrick Lamson-Hall will explore NYC police officers’ origins starting with the Dutch night watch system right on up through Tammany Hall and present day.

While today’s New York is likely the safest incarnation of the city ever seen, Lamson-Hall will explain that it has come at the price of a fair share of shattered communities, displaced or negatively impacted by the war on drugs, quotas and other policies.

The event will happen from 8:30-10 p.m. on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at the Brainery’s space on 190 Underhill Avenue. Tickets are $12 and available for purchase online.
