DOT Installs New Citi Bike Stations in Bed Stuy, Crown Heights to Follow

A number of new Citi Bike stations have popped up around Bed Stuy in recent months, good news for riders who used to have to walk blocks to Broadway or Lewis to pick up a bike.

A slew of new Citi Bike stations are popping up around Bed Stuy, Brownstoner has noticed on recent walks around the neighborhood. The majority of the new stations are filling up gaps in the network east of Lewis Avenue, good news for riders who used to have to walk blocks to stations around Broadway or Lewis Avenue to pick up a bike.

Brownstoner reported in June that 120 new stations would be coming to Bed Stuy, Crown Heights and Ocean Hill. Judging by Citi Bike’s online map of stations, Bed Stuy has been the first to get the new stations, with dozens in Ocean Hill and Crown Heights still to come. Currently Crown Heights cyclists have to travel up near Fulton Street or over towards Bedford Avenue to pick up a bike.

The new Bed Stuy stations include one at Hancock Street and Malcolm X Boulevard, one at Halsey Street and Ralph Avenue, and one at Chauncey Street and Howard Avenue. A new stations has also gone in at Thomas Boyland and Marion Street in Ocean Hill. According to Citi Bike’s map, there are more still to be installed in Bed Stuy, including one at Sarotoga Park.

Back in June, Department of Transportation spokesperson Tomas Garita told Brownstoner the DOT’s goal is “increasing access to bike share in more low-income communities and communities of color.” Although the expansion will help some central Brooklyn cyclists move around the borough, neighborhoods to the south and east of Crown Heights are still without any Citi Bike stations.
