Last week we reported that the would-be developer of 30 Henry Street, where the Brooklyn Eagle’s headquarters now stand, had submitted plans to the city for a new building on the site, and now there’s a bit more information on what might rise on the Brooklyn Heights corner. Contrary to what’s listed in DOB permits, developer Fortis Group plans to build a five-story, not six-story building. Judy Stanton of the Brooklyn Heights Association is quoted as saying the following about Fortis’s plans on Brooklyn Heights Blog: “With regard to 30 Henry Street, it is a gateway site in the Heights, and one that cries out for a distinctive and much more contemporary design than was shown to the BHA last week. Fortis has hired excellent architects in BKSK, and the BHA has respectfully asked them to ‘return to the drafting board’ to create a building that celebrates our time.” Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Paper has a bit more on the initial L-shaped design, saying it called for an “interior courtyard, water fountain and decorative balconies” as well as a red-brick facade.

  1. I have to agree that this site is the first thing you see when you take the off ramp from the bridge and head into Brooklyn Heights.
The good folks at the BHA should be careful what they ask for. Contemporary design today is very different from what it was in the 1960’s and 1970’s, which I’m sure is the image in their minds.
Would love to see Zaha Hadid design a swooping birdnest confection for that site, not so sure that feeling would be widely shared in the Heights. Maybe it would, dunno.
