I drive along Washington Ave. frequently, and cross Atlantic frequently. I think a bike lane on Washington would help a great deal, especially if they placed it between the parked cars and the sidewalk. Or – like on DeKalb – they eliminated parking completely on one side of the street.
The bicyclists tear down the hill and often cross Atlantic *fast*, gaining on cars on Washington before their drivers can really see or respond in some cases.
It’s hard integrating all of this, but it makes sense that bicyclists use streets with bike lanes during heavy traffic periods, even to cut down a little on the potential for an accident.
This death was tragic.
One of the most important jobs the County Commmittee performs is to vet judicial nominations. If you think it’s OK for Vito Lopez to unilaterally make those decisions, have a leisurely Tuesday.
Otherwise, please consider voting for the people who aren’t in his pocket.
Here is an editorial endorsing Jo Anne Simon for Democratic County Committee Leader in Joan Millman’s district (52nd AD):

Joan also endorses Jesse Strauss for male District Leader.
I used to think machine politics was a bad thing, but then I lived in Bushwick. There are people there who have housing, jobs, and medical care through Vito Lopez. In fact, practically the whole neighborhood it seems like sometimes. That’s not a bad thing. And what is the alternative? Favors for corporations instead of constituents. I think I might actually prefer the dirty old ways of Vito Lopez. At least he does things for his voters. By the way, he’s not actually hispanic, he changed his name. Anyone see the entrance to Rheingold Gardens (housing complex)? It says THANK YOU VITO LOPEZ RHEINGOLD GARDENS over the entrance, like THANK YOU VITO LOPEZ is the name of the building or something. I laugh every time I see it.
Riding a bike on Atlantic or Flatbush is just insane. Surprisingly, the people I often see navigating these stretches are either toting little children or tootling along in a sun dress. I feel bad for the girl but sometimes you just have to make smarter choices. Just because it should be safe to ride a bike on any street doesn’t make it so.
Pete, here are a few articles from the Brooklyn Paper that describe what Vito Lopez is trying to do to the Democratic County Committee:

“One of my birthday gifts was membership on a Web site that uses a personality test to match you with a farmer who grows kale in a manner compatible with your values, and I hosted a dinner party the night my first bushels arrived.”
FOR CHRIST’S SAKE……
I’m pretty sure this article was an attempt at satire….
There is no bike lane on Washington Ave, though this cyclist was killed on Atlantic approaching Washington apparently. No bike lanes on Atlantic either. In this case though its hard to know what difference a bike lane would have made if the bike lane has parked cars on one side. Drivers can still fling their doors open into the bike lane.
so who are the Lopez candidates?
Is there a bike lane on Washington Ave.?
