I agree with Benson. At a time when this city is in a financial crisis, when schools, hospitals, public transit, etc. are facing massive cuts, we spend money on this crap? Go figure.
Funny thing about the 60% graduation rate: this is for standards that are extremely low to begin with. These days, a passing grade on a regents exam is 55.
“and you dont already know how to do basic reading you are at a sever disadvantage.”
Not to mention spelling 🙂
I don’t know the type of people to whom you give out your address, DIBS, but if they’re not from NY they probably didn’t study its history growing up – if they are from NY (espeically NYC and surrounding areas) they have no excuse.
“The NYC high school graduation rate is only 60%. A fact that still amazes me every time I see it.”
It’s all good – property taxes are low so who cares!?
Speaking of history, I’m amazed that virtually everyone I have to give my address to has no idea where the name Stuyvesant came from. Not one person has been able to spell it.
The NYC high school graduation rate is only 60%. A fact that still amazes me every time I see it.

benson, you think kids that graduate from high school in NYC know anything at all about history?? Can they even read???
no, isnt the functional literacy rate of NYC public high school graduates something like 26% ? you can’t blame the school system or teachers for crap like that. people should know how to read before they start school. if you are starting kindergarten and you dont already know how to do basic reading you are at a sever disadvantage.
*rob*
“Uggh… I got a twinge there. I found myself agreeing with Benson.”
Don’t worry Ty. Others have been afflicted with this malady from time to time on Brownstoner. The good news is that it’s usually a temporary phenomenon. Hence, you will not be kicked off this site.
I’m pretty sure NYC still has terracotta water pipes in some neighborhoods. This city hasn’t had it’s infrastructure updated since 1890.
The irony of it all… the richer the city becomes (and the poor folks are pushed to the far reaches), the more NIMBYs sprout up and will stop any real improvements. Jackhammers are very bad for beauty sleep.
