Renovation started at Magnolia, at 486 6th Avenue, over the summer and the reopening date kept getting pushed back. So much so that we began to suspect the place was done for. And now Brooklynian has confirmed our suspicions. It turns out that the space was sold to a young chef and co-owner who will open a restaurant and wine bar featuring “small plates, seasonal-market inspired menu” and “modern American cuisine.” Prices will be higher than Magnolia. The new name is Soigne, to which one commenter notes: “Never, EVER, name your establishment a name that 99% of your clientele will be unable to pronounce.” GMAP

Here’s how it’s actually pronounced: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VB5_FScm41Q
Der Schwartze… a something seems to do quite well.
I liked Magnolia. Nice atmosphere, good food. I also appreciated that it was more low key than most of the places on 5th Ave. Sorry to see it go.
Maly,
If that’s how it’s pronounced then I pronounced it correctly the very first time.
Yay, me.
Ala Francias…
Soigne, Verb (spelled as-is):
“to care for”
If it’s missing the é, Soigné then adjective:
“neet, smart, nicely made”
“first rate”
You could just say “Swine” I guess.
I lived above this restaurant for many years this past decade. Magnolia was never the best restaurant, but it was decent and the portions were sizable. Roger, the manager, was also very affable.
I haven’t stepped foot in that part of the slope in probably three years, but I’ll be sad to see them go.
