There’s a new safe space to explore questions and feelings about death in a cafe setting, and it’s at one of Brooklyn’s most famous locations.

Green-Wood Cemetery is hosting a monthly “Death Cafe” starting this January.

The death cafe concept was created in 2011 by British entrepreneur Jon Underwood to “increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives,” in his words. Now there are more than 1,500 death cafes in 26 countries, according to Green-Wood.

Amy Cunningham, Brooklyn-based death educator and creator of the blog The Inspired Funeral, will moderate the discussion in the Green-Wood Cemetery chapel. Coffee and light snacks will be provided.

“It’s an opportunity for safe and open exchanges, without an agenda,” according to the writeup.

The first event will take place Tuesday, January 10 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Registration for the event is free, but RSVPs are encouraged. You can register for the cafe session here.
