Last night EPA officials came out to talk to the Gowanus community about the Superfund cleanup, and the Gowanus Alliance is reporting that the folks in charge don’t have a concrete plan yet for the job. One issue involves owners of properties off Columbia Street:

After attending the EPA meeting tonight it is clear they are no closer to finalizing a plan to proceed with cleanup, one proposal put forth by the Owners of Property off Columbia street known as Gowanus Bay Terminal will allow remediated material removed from the bottom of the canal to be used as fill at the site to increase land for the owners, as much as 25 acres of the bay could be allowed to be landfilled. A similar plan for the 5th street basin may be in the works. Let us know what you think! Should private property owners along the canal profit from the clean up or is this dangerous for future users? Let us hear from you.

  1. I’ve always thought that I was the only one who thought of filling in the canal. It is not as if the canal was a natural element of the land; it was dug from one of dozens of minor swampy inlets most of which were made into solid land. It is unrealistic that this will become idyllic Venice canal. It will never and should never. Filling it in should thrill the construction companies, and city conservatives who wanted to build the Toll Bros tower, and affordable housing cold be built here and sold for more than the cost of the work.
