Remember that fire we alerted you to yesterday? Well, no one sent in any photos so we went by at the end of the day to survey the damage. According to a nearby business owner, the fire started in the morning and attracted several fire trucks. Based upon what we could see, the upper two floors were gutted. No word on whether anyone was injured. GMAP
I just heard about the fire this morning as my good friend Akim lives on the top floor. He is a performance artist under the name Akim Funk Buddha and has performed at such venues as BAM cafe and Joe’s Pub. He had all of his costumes in the apartment, and seeing as making it in a recession as a performer is really tough, I know that he is going to need a lot of support to get through this. His website is http://www.akimfunkbuddha.org. I am going over tonight to see what can be saved!
Hey, everyone, I’m John, one of Pacific Standard’s owners. I just wanted to get the word out to those of you who haven’t stopped by today or yesterday that our building, thankfully, is completely fine (other than a temporary smoke smell). Also, our neighbors on the second floor next door made it out with only minor injuries (though the property damage to the building is pretty bad–everyone should indeed consider donating to our AIDS Housing Network/Books through Bars friends over there).
technically, youre right. nitpicky, jeez. since you were by there, do you know if pacific standard was affected. love that bar, good people.
while you were there you should have worked on the 150 fourth Ave site – cause recession/depression condo glut or not, it looks to me like they are going ahead (while the building on Carroll and fourth just rots)
Books Through Bars is also there.
Well, technically, no one emailed us, but point taken! Here’s the link to yesterday’s reader photo: http://bk.ly/A8
someone actually did post a link to a photo, so your copy is wrong.
The NYC AIDS Housing Network is also in that building, and evidently suffered smoke damage, loss of computers, etc. They are a stalwart local non-profit — now’d be a good time to send them a donation. http://nycahn.org/
thank god Glam-R-Us was spared! phew! ha. i like the name of that place. hopefully no one was hurt
